Women in Tourism – Meet Belinda Spence

In most regions of the world, WOMEN make up the majority of the tourism workforce!

We set out to meet these wonderful ladies along our N3 Gateway route and to discover more about the area they live in and what makes their community special!

Belinda Spence: Chairlady of the Drakensberg Experience Tourism Association

Being Chairperson of the Drakensberg Experience Tourism Association has offered me the opportunity to meet so many amazing people from all over South Africa and the world. Being passionate about the mountains is what drives me to promote our area as the most amazing destination to visit in kwaZulu-Natal and South Africa. I work closely with my dynamic committee to market our area in local markets to the public, like the Getaway shows, plus to the trade, being our international market. By increasing tourism into our area, we assist in benefiting all, by increasing employment, be it at a small B&B, a larger hotel or even in an activity-based business or restaurant.’

Give us a hint on why the Drakensberg is the best place to live in South Africa?
“I personally adore the Drakensberg as I love the outdoors, the majestic mountains with all the hidden secrets of caves, rock art, the trails that lead to peace and quiet, unbelievable fauna and flora and simple tranquillity.”

Which hike was your favourite in the Drakensberg Experience region?
“My most memorable time in the Drakensberg is without a doubt the time when I hiked the Grand Traverse. Being on the top of the world is like no feeling that can be explained, pure Heaven.

My local favourite hike would be to Blindman’s Corner. However, I love any opportunity to trail run or hike any part of the berg. Trying out new trails is even more exhilarating.”

What do you love about your community in the Drakensberg?
“Our community is just as passionate about our wonderful mountains as I am. Being on various committees has many benefits. Our Cathkin Trails employs previously unemployed people to now build and maintain trails for our community and tourists to enjoy the outdoors. Our conservancy is ongoing in decreasing the litter and promoting recycling to keep our area pristine and tourist-friendly, not to forget to keep Nature happy too. Our Drakensberg Experience Tourism Association promotes pride in school children of their area in order to be part of the tourism community, to be able to encourage more tourists to visit and share our mountains with us.”
