Women in Tourism – Meet Briony Smith
We continue our celebration of Women in Tourism and today we meet Briony Smith, a Member of the Durban West Tourism Association.
Briony Smith has worked in a variety of tourism sectors – from corporate, domestic and incentive markets, to the inbound and hospitality sectors. She has also worked for stalwarts in the local and international tourism industry, such as Gooderson Leisure, Thompsons Tours and American Express. More recently, Briony was responsible for the Region Marketing Africa and the Domestic team of Tourism KwaZulu-Natal and prior to that, headed up the group’s department at the inbound Scandinavian company Get Africa Travel for some six years. With over 18 years of tourism experience and an exceptional knowledge of the region, coupled with an insatiable desire to build our tourism sector, Briony can now be found doing what she does best – giving back and making travel accessible to all with her current role as Marketing Consultant for Africa Ignite under the WowZulu brand.
Give us a hint on why Durban West is the best place to live in South Africa?
Where do I begin! From lush green gardens to an abundance of birdlife, endless shopping opportunities, rich historical sites, extraordinary markets, friendly neighbours and a mere 15 min from the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. I mean, what more could a girl ask for?
Which is your best space to visit in Durban West?
Can I really mention only one? Okay, then I have to say the place that feeds my soul would have to be Makaranga Garden Lodge. The lodge is home to the largest private collection of Zimbabwean stone art in Southern Africa located throughout thirty acres of indigenous and exotic botanical gardens. And as for the food, well you will have to try it for yourself.
What do you love about your community?
I can honestly say I love the fact that I am not left wanting for anything. From family-friendly activities to a profusion of places to tantalize my taste buds, I really have no reason to leave, okay, maybe only to visit the beach.
Is there a certain lady you are inspired by in your community?
Without a doubt Bernice Cousins, the head of Children’s Ministry at St Agnes Church. Her passion for the wellbeing of children both physical and spiritual not forgetting emotional, within and around our greater community is undeniable. She has the biggest heart with the warmest soul and should you meet her, you will notice her childlike spirit is irrefutable. To me, she is my laugh a minute friend and a pillar of strength in times of need.
