Now the guns are silent, no more the roar of cannons, the crash of musketry, the stamping of many feet and the rattle of assegai against rawhide shield. The hills and plains are quiet, broken only by the call of the herders and the crack of a whip. All that is left to remind us of those turbulent years are the silent cemeteries and lonely monuments.
But place yourself in the hands of one of the many skilful Guides that abound this region and once again you will thrill to the imagined sounds of battle and relive the desperate and courageous acts of gallant men fighting for what they believed was right.
Names like Shaka, Cetshwayo, Dingaan, Blood River, Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift, Ulundi, the Zulu Kingdom, Majuba, Ladysmith, Talana, Spioenkop, Colenso, Rider Haggard, Churchill, Mahatma Ghandi, Louis Botha, Zulus, Boers, British and many others leap out of the pages of history to excite the imagination! With some 90 sites and 8 wars the Battlefields Region of KwaZulu-Natal has much to offer the Battlefield enthusiast.
The Battlefields Region also includes a large number of nature and game reserves. In the Balele Mountains and around Estcourt there are a number of streams and dams stocked with trout for the avid fly fisherman while in many of the large dams that abound the plains areas you will find bass. There are numerous bird sanctuaries and bird watching areas in the Region and Bird Life Northern Natal members are always delighted to take visitors out and show them around.
