History and Culture
Mariannhill Monastery has beautiful buildings full of history. The monastery was founded by The Trappist prior Father Francis Pfanner during the Christmas season of 1882. Tours can be arranged. The repository offers a wide range of religious books you can order your own hand made candles for any occasion be it weddings, anniversaries or christenings. There is a coffee shop onsite.
We have 3 museums all offering a diverse unique and interactive space.
Umkhumbane: Captures this community’s spirit of defiance towards apartheid. Exhibits in the form of photographs, news clippings historical accounts and letters documented during the evictions, riots and rebellion that marred the area for decades.
Bergtheil Museum: Housed in the oldest building in Westville, the farmhouse dates back to the early 1840’s. Declared a National Heritage Monument in 1983, the museum houses a fine collection of German period furniture and relics, military records, Zulu and Hindu displays.
Pinetown Museum: Housed in the architecturally award winning library opened in 1982, the museum has an excellent display of multicultural artefacts and photographs relating to Pinetown.
