Soot in my hair…. Don’t care!
Granted I was hanging out the window like an over excited Labrador enjoying Paton Country Railways steam train ride from Creighton! I love trains, especially steam trains and if ever I get an opportunity to take a journey on one, I seize it with both hands!
The train leaves from the Creighton station and takes place through the country that Alan Paton made famous in his book, “Cry the Beloved Country“. This thoroughly enjoyable steam train trip is a perfect family outing, our carriage was filled with excited children, moms and dads and grannies and grandpas. The trip itself is roughly 3 hours so it makes for a great day outing. Before boarding you can fill up on reasonably priced coffee, muffins and their famous egg and bacon rolls before finding your carriage. Colourful beadwork is for sale along the platforms and if you’re lucky, there may even be a Creighton Valley Cheese stall where you can buy some delicious artisan cheeses to take home with you. On return you can enjoy a pre-booked lunch at the Creighton Club or simply head towards the Midlands Meander to find a suitable restaurant or coffee shop.
The journey takes you across the Umzimkulu River and along the Ngwangwana River, through the winding hills of the Southern Drakensberg. Be ready to wave at smiling children who come out to watch the train’s journey! Winter train journeys are glorified with vibrant aloes bejeweling the landscape. The photo opportunities for both amateur and professionals alike, will delight! There are two stops along the way, the first at a little village called Riverside for 15 minutes to explore whilst the engine moves into position for the return trip and the second one alongside the river where giant aloes tower over the tallest passengers. HINT: Be prepared for the grand old dame to give a good display of steam and puff at the river!
The Creighton train is a symbol of what a group of motivated, passionate individuals can achieve together! Hair can be washed but an experience like this makes you smile at the memories!
Booking is really simple, you have a choice of carriages to choose from, a quick email and an eft payment and you can look forward to your adventure.
The next Creighton Steam Train date is Sunday 7 October, for their annual Spring Day Steam Train Ride and Picnic. This is just around the corner and we know it will book up fast!
