This Tugela River paddle over three days and two nights covers one of South Africa’s best stretches of white water.
Covering one of the best stretches of white water in South Africa, this paddle is great for both rafting and kayaking. We approach the canyon excursion as a multi-day hike and only take along the necessary equipment to make your descent easier and more efficient down the river. The trip includes all equipment, guiding and transport back to your vehicle. Rapids you can expect along the way include Rocky Horror, Klip Rapid, Off the Wall, Frog’s Playground, Washing Machine, Liquidizer, Finger Rock, Ledges and of course Keisha! This is not a river where you will be floating along in luxury as it is action from the word go!
Day 1 – Pieter’s Station to Klip River inflow
Take to the water at Peter’s Station, just below the Colenso Falls and approximately 16km from Ladysmith. Here you will immediately experience the thrill of the Tugela River as there are so many rapids on this first stretch, you will actually have trouble remembering them all!
The first big action-filled rapids you will encounter are S-Bend and Rocky Horror. After a exhilarating few hours, it’s time to relax and camp out on the banks of the river near Klip Rapid, just below the Klip River’s inflow into the Tugela River.
Day 2 – Klip River inflow to Zingela Safari and River Company
Be prepared for a big day! As you paddle further down the canyon, you will truly start getting that feeling of isolation. Down here it is wild water rather than white water! Here you will pass by some of the river’s big gun rapids. Just when you thought the action has come to an end, you will arrive at Zingela Safari and River Company, one of South Africa’s most well-known white water destinations. Now it’s up to you as we provide for your accommodation and rafting preferences, so get ready to savour the action or just relax and enjoy the outdoors!
Day 3 – Zingela Safari and River Company to Causeway
This is a short day out on a popular commercial section of the Tugela River. You’re almost home, but don’t get too comfortable just yet! There are still some major rapids to negotiate and you can expect fantastic paddling all the way.
