The Clarens Golf Estate, situated in a peaceful valley with spectacular scenery and is just two and a half hours by car from both Johannesburg and Durban. The estate features a country-style 18-hole golf course.
Your round of golf at the Clarens Golf Estate begins at the stylish clubhouse, strategically positioned to view the finish of both nines, as well as the magnificent Mount Horeb (Setlofe). According to Basotho legend, Setlofe was a shy maiden betrothed to the warrior Matsa (Rhebokkop). When he jilted her for another, it broke Setlofe’s heart. Even today, when she thinks about it, she draws her veil around her head and weeps. Thus, when the Setlofe Mountain is shrouded in cloud, you can expect it to rain soon in Clarens.
Before you tee off, take time to absorb the town’s picturesque setting, with its 360-degree view of the mountains. All 18 holes meander along and across the tranquil river and its splendid series of waterfalls and cascades.
The playing surface of the manicured Kikuyu fairways and Bent grass greens are framed by mature Willow and magnificent Lombardi Poplar Trees, characteristic of the area. This layout is a classic ‘risk and reward’ design. With the fairways wide at the landing areas off the tees, it is easy to reach the greens in keeping with your personal handicap. However, as nearly every green hugs the water, it’s a case of play safe to your handicap, or attack the flags to ‘go low’.
The course designers have taken great care through attention to detail and visual appeal to ensure that each round of golf you play will be as memorable, if not more so than the previous one.
