Several venues along the banks of the Vaal River offer great fishing waters and experiences. Most fishing spots and venues are found along the River Road, Riverfront, Scenic and Vaal Marina Routes. We have packaged some ‘taster’ itineraries to whet your appetite and illustrate the options available.
Option 1: Fly/Bait Fishing Raft Safaris – facilitated by: Tapimanzi Adventures (Scenic Route)
DAY 1: The owners of Tapimanzi Adventures are regarded as the Vaal’s adventure tourism gurus. At their fishing location, a secluded spot along the Suikerbos River, you can use two-man inflatable rafts to fish for Yellows (small and large mouth), Carp, Barbel and Mudfish. Experienced fly/bait fishing and rafting guides will accompany you along secluded rapids and stretches of water. They supply rods, reels and flies and the trip can accommodate maximum of 20 people per group.
Contact Tapimanzi Adventures to organise an agreed meeting point, after which they will provide the logistics of the trip. Sleep-over at the three-star Ikhamanzi B & B (Scenic Route)
Leave the fishing spot and proceed to Ikhamanzi Bed & Breakfast, where you will spend the night. Relax at the rock pool before opting to enjoy a Fondue, Swiss ‘Raclette’ dinner or one of the other dinner options available. DAY 2: Continue your Fishing Expedition
After breakfast, a guide from Tapimanzi Adventures will meet you and direct you further along the stretch of the Suikerbos River.
After a successful day outdoors, make your way home.
Option 2: Raft Bass Fishing Safaris – facilitated by Tapimanzi Adventures (Scenic, River Road and Riverfront Routes)
DAY 1: Fish for the large-mouthed Bass from two-man inflatable rafts on the barrage reservoir stretch between Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark. You can catch these aggressive fish using lures, flukes, spinner baits or on fly! Experienced guides will accompany the happy anglers for the duration of the fishing safari. This trip accommodates a maximum of 20 people per group. Contact Tapimanzi Adventures for an agreed meeting point, after which they will provide trip logistics.
Sleep-over at the four-star Feather’s Boutique Guesthouse (Riverfront Route)
Depart from your fishing spot and proceed to Feather’s Boutique Guesthouse, a unique venue where you can relax before having dinner at the exclusive Hannah’s Bistro. The owners have taken great care to create a luxurious environment, where guests can unwind in the stunning surroundings after a gruelling day out on the Vaal. DAY 2: After breakfast, a guide fromTapimanzi Adventures will meet you and direct you further along the stretch of the Vaal in the Vanderbijlpark area. At the end of the expedition it’s time to depart for home.
Option 3: 3-Hour Fishing Cruise – facilitated by Stonehaven on Vaal (River Road Route)
Directions: From Johannesburg; take the R59 and head southeast. Take exit 2 to merge onto Barrage Road/R42 towards Vanderbijlpark; then turn left onto R57 to take the exit towards Ravel Road. Here you turn right at Ravel Road; turn left at the second cross street onto Vaal Drive where the venue will be on the right. Stonehaven on Vaal offers luxurious personalised fishing expeditions on the Vaal River. An experienced angler will be there to guide you through every aspect of the whole expedition to ensure the experience is as interesting and as enjoyable as possible. You can even opt to do the trip aboard a luxurious cruiser with snacks and a bar to keep you going throughout the day!
Try your hand at catching Yellowfish, Carp, Bass and more, while slowly cruising the deeper parts of the Vaal River. With various certified cruisers available –from a speedboat for two, to a luxury cruiser for 40 people chartered by certified Stonehaven Skippers – you can enjoy a solo angling cruise or invite a large group of angling enthusiasts to join you.
Option 4: Your Own Houseboat – Cruise ‘n Snooze (River Road & Riverfront Routes) Two-Day Self-drive/Fishing
Directions: From Johannesburg on the N1; Pass the Sasolburg/Vanderbijlpark exit before taking the next exit to Vanderbijlpark/Potchefstroom. At the T-junction on the bridge, turn left towards Vanderbijlpark; After 2km, turn right at the Loch Vaal sign. Continue for 5km, and then turn left at the stop sign. After 2km, turn right at ‘The River Road / SW5’ sign; Follow this for 2km, then turn right at the ‘Kaalplaats’ sign located in Windsor Road.
Board your own Leisureliner 260 Houseboat to fish at leisure aboard your vessel for the next couple of days, while exploring 55km of navigable waters. The Leisureliner 260 is a very popular recreational vessel for self-catering charters. The houseboats are moored in a private lagoon, which is separated from the main river by a 30m x 20m island. Across from the private island stretches a 500m-wide section of the Vaal River, with an island known as Bird Island in between the banks.
Option 5: Fly Fishing Tutoring and Guided Day Out – Yellow Fish Fly Fishing School. Facilitated By Ralph Radford (River Road Route)
Self-confessed Vaal River fly-fishing extremist Ralph Radford will eagerly host you on some of the best rapids the river has to offer. Join him as he visits several fly-fishing venues and the best fishing spots, dependent on the most favourable conditions during the season. Ralph will teach you all you need to know about the Mayfly and Cadis lifecycle before you hit the rapids to tackle a small- or large-mouth Yellow! Fly tying lessons are an optional extra for newbie anglers.
