One or two day mountain biking trails in the Northern Drakensberg. Over 100km of mountain biking trail to explore, experienced rider can enjoy 30km on day 1 and 25km trail on day 2.

Day 1: Berghouse Trail and Wanhoop – 30km.

This trail leaves the Adventure Centre on the scenic intermediate Gorge Trail and takes in lovely views of the Montusi Waterfall and Petrified Forest.  The Rocky Pass descent and Waterfall Challenge make for some interesting riding before the fast flat Canal Trail past the Tower of Pizza and along Steyn’s Lane.  The short stretch of tar to cross the Tugela River is followed by a proper climb up to the Berghouse.  From there the trail takes a scenic meander along the escarpment, before making a steep descent into the Wanhoop Valley.

After the tricky river crossing a scenic riverside meander enables you to recover before the demanding climb out of the Wanhoop Valley.  The trail then passes the entrance to Montusi Lodge (where you are welcome to stop and purchase drinks!) and then makes a steep descent down Forbidden Pass, to the trail that returns to All Out Adventures. There you can enjoy a well-deserved cappuccino and a home-made scone.

Day 2: Grotto Trail and Trilby Return – 25km.

The trail starts off gently on the Gypsy’s Bend and Acacia trails so you have enough time to get warmed up before hitting the bridges on the Ledges Trail, and the gruelling climb that starts the Grotto Trail, from the Cavern’s Stables Dam to Cowslip Falls.  The Cavern’s shop is a welcome stop on the climb to refill water bottles and dwindling sweetie supplies! From Cowslip Falls you will ride one of the most beautiful trails in the country, through the Protea trees along the edge of Surprise Ridge to the top of Fan Falls.  The sheer drops, mountain views and flowing trails make this a spectacular bit of riding.  Exercise caution though, there are consequences if you get it wrong up here!  The Grotto Trail connects up with the Trilby Trail, which climbs over the ridge on beautiful single track, offering stunning views of the Drakensberg’s Amphitheatre.  The fast descent to Orion Mont Aux Sources Hotel makes all the climbing worthwhile.  The trail then follows Thabani’s Traverse until a short section of tar down to the Tugela River. Save a bit for the short steep “Tugela Traction” climb out of the river valley.  Another short stretch on the tar takes riders to the Hlalanathi Trails, which connects up to All Out Adventures.
