Cumberland is a 300ha privately owned Nature Reserve , east of Pietermaritzburg .An extensive network of trails vary from short strolls to more strenuous hikes . Paths following the cliff edge command spectacular vistas over the uMngeni River The Reserve is home to several antelope species including Impala , Nyala , Kudu , Blesbok and Duiker as well as Zebra and Giraffe .
Birding is popular with over 250 species listed . Wonderful diversity for photographic opportunities . There are frequent sights of the African Rock Python . The Reserve is open daily from 6.30am to 6pm . 2017 entry fee is R20 per person . No dogs are permitted in the Reserve . Mountain bikes are welcome , no motorcycles are permitted .Picnic sites : Set under the shade of acacia trees offer braai facilities , picnic tables and toilets .No music or littering is permitted . Campsite : No power points , ablutions with gas geyser and battery lights . Self-catering accommodation with fully equipped kitchen .Krantz Hut : Sleeps 2 , strategically situated in the southern side of the Reserve to offer privacy . Booking is essential for all accommodation .
