Day 1: After arriving and booking in, it’s time to let your hair down, put on your walking boots and start exploring the picturesque town of Clarens.
Start with some retail therapy at the charming shops in the Windmill Centre, within easy walking distance of Poplar Place. Banish any hunger pangs by enjoying a hearty meal and drink at Artist Café Restaurant. Now it’s time to experience some creativity by visiting the Johan Smith Art Gallery next door. Here, owner and artist Johan Smith exhibits his well-known, colourful ‘African Sky’ paintings. There are also other diverse art and art forms on exhibit to suit every taste. These include one of the most extensive glass collections of glass artists such as David Reade, as well as a wide selection of ceramics, bronzes and investment art. If you have blown your savings on a large painting and are worried about taking it back home, don’t worry, the gallery will gladly organise a courier service or deliver it to your door personally.
By now, art enthusiasts will be ready to visit the Blou Donki Gallery, which exhibits fun artworks by prominent South African artists such as Makiwa Mutomba, Ann Gadd, Annette Dannhauser, Anton Gericke and Marguerite Beneke.
Day 2: Around the corner from the Artist Café is another little gem. At Clarens Kado you are sure to find something to buy from its wonderful collection of bath products, fun items and exclusive gifts. The shop also stocks a wide range of home décor including the Maneki van Staal range, Rain bath products, Honeysuckle pamper packs and handmade handbags.
Right next door to Clarens Kado, you will find a host of delectable edible products at the Purple Onion Deli. For those with a sweet tooth, handmade Belgian truffles or msoba jam and cherry jam are great options, while you can also indulge in their delicious biltong and savoury snacks. This is the ideal spot to order a lovely cappuccino to enjoy on the deck while you enjoy the tranquillity and beautiful view towards Golden Gate. Before leaving, why not spoil yourself and fill up your basket with olive products, biscuits, salad dressings, sweets for the kids, fudge for mother-in-law and a cookbook or two?
