Eskom has Visitors Centres at its Drakensberg and Ingula Pumped Storage Schemes situated in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, on both sides of Van Reenen’s Pass.
The Visitors Centre at Drakensberg has been operating for over 25 years. Station tours are conducted, taking visitors 156 metres underground.
Eskom’s newest Visitors Centre at Ingula, offers a unique experience, as the station is still under construction. Currently the focus at Ingula is on conservation as the site is situated in a 12 000ha conservation area. This area is close to being proclaimed as a nature reserve, the highest level of protection in South Africa. Once proclaimed it will be Eskom’s third nature reserve. Our friendly staff have a working knowledge of the technology and construction aspects of a pumped storage scheme, as well as of the environment and wildlife found in the area. A key aspect of the Ingula Visitors Centre is that it undertakes activities to promote the Ingula Partnership between Eskom, BirdLife South Africa and Middelpunt Wetlands Trust. The centre offers site tours of the construction project and conservation area.
Bookings are essential at both centres.
