Dribbling Spoonfuls on the Midlands Meander

We all know the feeling… escaping the all too familiar year long ‘taxi service’ of school runs, after-school sports, concerts, meetings, exercise dates and the dreaded deadlines we chase. So we pack our family and in-laws in the car, for what we promise will be their best Summer holiday ever and head along the N3 Toll Route in desperation to unwind, have free-range children, and a digital detox (if only just for a short break). Of course on a road trip, children seem to need the toilet far more than usual and food seems to be the greatest way to break the trip and end the question of, “Are we there yet?” Because we are efficient, we have done our research on the N3 Gateway website and discovered just the spot to stop, eat and Instagram your meal, ensuring all your friends wish they were with you.

The staff at the N3 Gateway receive quite a few enquiries as to which eatery would suit a family of many dietary needs, from vegetarian to that drop down on one knee meal-with-a-view request. To give an honest answer, we ensure our staff are fully up to date and can immediately suggest that perfect location.

Here are a few of our top mouth-watering stops:

Coming from either Johannesburg or Durban, along the N3 Toll Route,  a very easy quick stop that satisfies the appetite and allows the kids to run free and play outdoors is the Bistro on 30° just off the N3 in Mooi River. The best banting breakfast is available and for those who do love a carb, the cream scones are light and lip-smackingly delicious.

For those looking to Meander along the Midlands, your opportunity is endless with various eateries awaiting your arrival.

Terebedore Coffee Roasters along the Curry’s Post Road, allows grown-ups to enjoy lazy lunches in their gorgeous country garden or for the cooler days, indoors, surrounded by their signature coffee aromas. The lamb shank will melt in your mouth, with suitably rich flavours and although you may already be full, you keep gnawing on it as it’s too good to waste.

Yellowwood Cafe just off the Karkloof Road provides the perfect space for children to slurp a milkshake, gobble a toastie and visit the farm animal pens on site, whilst adults take in views of the Howick Falls and discover the pleasure of uninterrupted conversations again.

For those with a sweet tooth, a love for shopping and perhaps a garden in need of a proud agapanthus, then Sue Tarr’s Summerhouse is the cosy location you are in need of. Set in the leafy village of Hilton, you will find this gem of a country location, housing a nursery, decorative home pieces and a coffee shop.

Did you know the Snooty Fox Restaurant offers a full vegan menu? How delightful. Fresh, seasonal, locally sourced country produce, all put together to offer exquisite flavours. Find The Snooty Fox opposite MidMar Dam.

Perhaps you are humming “All I want for Christmas is YOU” and you are currently looking for that all-important venue to ask your treasure to be with you forever. Get to Fordoun Hotel and Restaurant enjoy their fine dining menu, and end your afternoon with an easy walk to the dam, where your witnesses will be of the pretty feathered kind.

There are certainly far too many places to mention in just one blog post, discover the Midlands Meander Food Route further by clicking on the guide.
