4 – Full day hike options
We have heard from our members there are marvellous yet challenging day hikes that you should know about. South Africa may not be travel-ready for leisure purposes, however, we do know you are allowed to head out for a self-drive within your province and enjoy a day hike.
From Durban or Pietermaritzburg.
4 Day Hike Options:
Such a special walk for the whole family admittedly quite a bit of motivation needed for the smaller members of the group. The hike begins and ends at Mont Park Guest Farm. Once you have paid your R50 per person, head up, that’s right, keep going, the path does eventually flatten. Your view at the top; sweeping views of the area. The hike does have a secret weapon, which we won’t mention, you can discover for yourself.
Grab your binoculars as there are beautiful Cape Vultures circling up above in the Winter. Perhaps a few other raptors.
In this case, take lots of water, 500ml per person is not enough. The hike is a 6km roundtrip and can take 3 hours for the moderately fit or 5 hours for those with small little ones needing a regular break. Don’t forget to claim your complimentary tea & coffee when you return back to Mount Park.
Khula Shanti Forest Walk
Seeking a more moderate option?
Head to Boston where you can enjoy an easy walk through a cool forest. Khula Shanti forest walk is available for any age. You begin this easy walk at the Pickle Pot Cafe, which if you have ever visited Underberg from Durban, would have passed by on the R617.
Take your family, grab a picnic from the Pickle Pot after and soak up the sights and sounds of the forest birds.
No formal fee, but a donation is requested for forest rehabilitation.
Karkloof Forest Walk
We do love a zipline, however, whilst it’s currently not in action a walk along the many trail options will do just fine.
Karkloof Forest Adventure set within the Karkloof Forest Reserve where waterfalls, forest streams, incredible trees and plentiful birds are a buzz. See how many smaller mammals and forest birds you can spot.
Book your time this weekend!
Get to the beautiful Fordoun, their farm walking trails provide you with sweeping views of the Drakensberg mountains as well as slow country farm life. Furthermore, you can book a picnic for after the walk.
R30 gets you a chance to take a brisk walk or run through the Fordoun farm grounds. Views of the Drakensberg are immediate and provide you with that joyful feeling of ‘freedom’!
