Explore the Old Pietermaritzburg Prison which is a historical gem thriving in the winds of change and touching lives every day. Project Gateway has been declared an official heritage site and within the old prison walls is a national monument and a museum documenting some of South Africa’s diverse history. Why not book a tour of the Old Prison and find out about the political prisoners held here or see what is rumoured to be Mahatma Gandhi’s solitary confinement cell.
Project Gateway is based in The Old Prison. It was converted into a centre for several church-based community development projects. Through these projects, the Church was able to reach out and meet people in their crisis need, and empower them to become self-sufficient.
Given the alarming statistics surrounding the HIV/AIDS pandemic, poverty and unemployment levels, and the vulnerability of certain groups within our society, Project Gateway aims to run effective and dynamic programmes, changing lives and impacting communities.
Over the years, Project Gateway has supported a huge number of projects as they reached out to local communities. Today, they have started to move away from individual projects and aim to equip and empower local people through empowerment, care and education programmes.
